Head coach and owner of Iceni Training Jan Westrik.
Jan (pronounced Yan) first discovered CrossFit whilst in the Military in 2012. Starting as a way to keep fit for his job, his passion for CrossFit and helping others on their journey soon took over. Jan left the army and opened Iceni Training in January 2016 (originally called CrossFit Iceni). Jan has a great thirst for knowledge and is constantly aiming to better himself as an athlete as well as helping everyone around him to achieve their goals.
Jan is our members first port of call for anything and everything CrossFit.
Tell us a little about you?
I'm 36, Mum of Jacob who is 8, I grew up in Ipswich with my biggest passion being gymnastics, first competing then coaching. I have lived in Germany, Wiltshire and North Yorkshire, before returning home to Suffolk. When I'm not coaching or being Mum, I like coffee, gin, hanging with friends and walking my dog Brucey.
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit back in 2013. As soon as I saw the CrossFit games on YouTube I knew straight away this is for me so I had to try it! And I instantly fell in love with it. Jacob was 6months old at the time so starting CrossFit gave me some ‘me time’, got me fit again and allowed me to release my inner gymnast again!
What is your favourite thing about training at Iceni Training?
When I moved to Colchester, Iceni was literally the 1st place I went to! And I never left! The second I walked in everyone made me feel so welcome, and I’ve met the best of friends since training here. The classes have a great atmosphere and the programming is fantastic.
What coaching experience do you have?
I have been coaching gymnastics since I was 15 and passed my 1st coaching exam when I was 16. After finishing A-levels at 18 I started coaching full time and worked my way up to British Gymnastics L3 qualification and coaching gymnasts to national level.
I have also been coaching the CrossFit kids sessions at Iceni for over a year and a half now and I have recently passed my CrossFit L1 Trainer exam too.
What are you looking forward to the most about coaching at Iceni?
I love being at Iceni so to be able to coach there is like bonus time spent at the gym! All the members are fantastic and I can’t wait to be able to give them the type of classes that I fell in love with myself and give everyone some helpful hints and tips along the way!
Jamal Khan isn’t just known at Iceni Training for his impeccable hair dos, but also for his great background in Gymnastics.
Having come to the gym first as a member he quickly took to CrossFit and his potential for being a great coach quickly become apparent when he started walking around on his hands better than most can their own feet.
With a background in coaching fitness before a career in the fire service, Jamal took his CrossFit Level one in 2017 as has been a valuable member of the team ever since.
Kias has had a long career in fitness; from owning Colchester Bootcamp to being a personal training mentor.
His knowledge, experience and fantastic personality add a great dynamic to the coaching team here at Iceni Training. His energy towards helping others and being a part of the community made him the perfect guy to complete our team.
We look forward to seeing how is knowledge and experience will continue contributing to the coaching team.
